“Argue With Me”: A Method for Developing Argument Skills

Philosophers, psychologists, and educators all acknowledge the need to support individuals develop argument skills. Less clear is how do so. Here, we examine a particular program, “Argue with Me” dialogue-based pedagogical approach, having this objective. Reviewing approximately 30 studies that have used (AWM) method students of different backgrounds educational levels—primary, middle, high school, university—across five countries, its strengths limitations in terms what develops development occurs. Dense engagement goal-based activities involving extended dialogic practice reflection shown be effective fostering skills dispositions. Studies examining mechanisms such identify role meta-level understanding regarding purpose argument. This epistemological nature supports at strategic level. In addition AWM as means for supporting skills, review examines empirical research employing varying contexts provides insights into their development, well relations between other or forms understanding. For instance, answer questions “How general content-specific are skills?” individual written spoken connect they develop?” We address these by evidence transfer gains across topics, domains, vs. modes expression.
